Hanover County is an ever-growing suburban community of more than 100,000 people located in the center of Virginia’s population growth areas. Located 12 miles north of Richmond, Hanover County is a major part of the Richmond metropolitan area and is geographically one of Virginia’s largest counties at 461 square miles. Due to the sprawling suburban and rural landscape, the Hanover County Government recognized a need in their community for accessible public transit to serve those in the community that could not drive themselves. Thanks to a grant from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, Hanover County began offering a Hanover DASH as its paratransit service with Roundtrip on December 12, 2019.
Through the Roundtrip Community, Hanover County has created a viable paratransit solution from the ground up, and on August 5th, 2020, Hanover DASH completed its 1,000th ride in the community! The collaboration between the county and Roundtrip is enhancing the independence, health, and well-being of many of the county’s residents. By connecting Roundtrip’s robust technology and reliable network of drivers, Hanover DASH is providing individualized trips to doctors’ offices, grocery stores, banks, and formal, social, and recreational programs. With Roundtrip’s online booking platform, approved riders now have greater flexibility booking same-day, point-to-point rides, with as little as 24-hour notice. And once rides are booked, riders can receive real-time notifications about the status of their trips via text or phone. “We believe that this new specialized transportation program will make a big difference for many of our residents,” said Deputy County Administrator Jim Taylor. “Hanover County has identified the need for specialized transportation for some time, and it’s exciting to see a new service taking shape.”
It shouldn’t be lost that Hanover DASH also passed this milestone during the COVID-19 pandemic as well. With safety standards in place, Hanover DASH continued to be a safe transportation option compared to typical transportation alternatives. The exciting part about Hanover DASH is the fact that the program is still at the beginning with many more rides to come. Hanover County considers the solution to still be in its infancy and sees it as a long-term solution for its residents. “It is great to see the innovative mobility options that counties in Virginia have put in place on behalf of the growing needs of their communities,” said Ankit Mathur, CTO of Roundtrip and Virginia resident of over 30 years. “Working with Hanover County is a privilege and we are happy to make a positive impact on the everyday living for residents in the community.”
